The Mayflower Quarterly, Vol. 74, No. 3

This Post will show excerpts from the Mayflower Quarterly. The quarterly provides a look at the history of the Pilgrims. i.e. European connection, why they came to America (e.g. some for religeous beliefs), and early days in Plymouth. I will also include some writings of the Natives e.g. Wampanoags who were most responsible for their survival.

The Mayflower Society's (Mayflower descendants) goal is to preserve the history of the Pilgrims for future generations.
This Post along with the Comments- my notes, and yours, hopefully will be educational and entertaining.

Mayflower Society- Warren line

Good news. I just received the second approval of three Dewolf lines to the Mayflower. This is the Richard Warren line. The first being the Mullins-Alden line which was approved two years ago.

There is one document remaining to submit the Gov. William Bradford line for approval. It has been a lot of gratifying work since 1985; however, Doris, and Uncle Bill Pratt provided the game plan. Like Doris, I am trying to provide 'tracks' which will be useful to future generation who may be interested in the genealogy of our families.
I will send all Documents to Flickr for all.

Veteran's Memorial Plano, TX

The Veteran's Memorial Committee of the City of Plano conviened at the Memorial site last evening to witness the progress to date. It is an amazing tribute to our Veterans, military forces currently protecting our freedoms and their families.

Dedication will be on November 11, 2008, Veteran's Day. A number of dignitaries, military organizations, local law enforcement and people of Plano and surrounding areas will be present.

One of the most noteable speakers will be the Honerable Sam Johnson of the House of Representatives representing our District. 'Sam', as he likes to be called, was shot down during the Viet Nam Conflict and spent seven years as a POW. He is my personal Hero.

I have posted several pictures on Flickr, with more to come.

William Bradford, Gov. MA

William Bradford
British Plymouth colony governor
Main
born March 1590, Austerfield, Yorkshire, Eng.
died May 9, 1657, Plymouth, Mass. [U.S.]

governor of the Plymouth colony for 30 years, who helped shape and stabilize the political institutions of the first permanent colony in New England. Bradford also left an invaluable journal chronicling the Pilgrim venture, of which he was a part.

As a boy in England, he was caught up in the fervour of the Protestant Reformation and became a dedicated member of the Separatist Church, the “left wing” of Puritanism, when only 12. Seven years later he joined a group of nonconformists who migrated to Holland (1609) in search of religious freedom. Dissatisfied with the lack of economic opportunity there, he helped organize an expedition of about 100 “Pilgrims” to the New World in 1620. Aboard ship, Bradford was one of the framers of the historic Mayflower Compact, an agreement for voluntary civil cooperation that became the foundation of the Plymouth government. The following year he was unanimously chosen as governor of the New World settlement and was re-elected 30 times, serving all but five years until 1656.

Bradford is remembered mainly for his contribution in nurturing the fledgling colony’s democratic institutions, such as the franchise and town meeting, thus establishing those traditions of self-government that would set the pattern for national political development in years to come. Although he called himself a Congregationalist, he discouraged sectarian labels and made a point of welcoming all Separatist groups to New England shores. In addition, he evolved means of assimilating nonbelievers into the life of the colony.

Bradford’s History of Plymouth Plantation, 1620–47 is a unique source of intimate detail and description of both the sea voyage and the hardships and challenges faced by the settlers.

'a few years ago', on this date, they set sail for America. God Bless Them.

This is a list of the Plano, Tx soldiers who have paid the 'supreme sacrifice' for their country.

Jeff our oldest son was good friends with Casey Joyce as a senior at Plano Sr. High. Our local VFW was renamed in Casey's honor a few years ago.
